Latin: Magnus Chartophylax
CHARTOPHYLAX. - A dignitary of the Byzantine Church, called, under Andronikos the Younger, also "Magnus c.", who was originally the custodian of the archives of the patriarchate.
Later, on certain occasions, he also replaced the vicar general of the patriarchate. He was accorded great honors, and his oath attested to the authenticity of the documents delivered by him at councils. Particularly in episcopal elections, in the appointment of high dignitaries and in the conferral of benefices, he had to examine the candidates, inquire into their life and morals, and present them to the patriarch.
However, toward the end of the 12th century, a part of his attributions over clerics and monks passed to the "primus defensor" (πρωτέκδος).
