CYRIL OF CONSTANTINOPLE, Saint. - Third general of the Order of Carmelites and formerly prior on Mount Carmel, where he died almost a centenarian around 1225. Besides many false prophecies spread by the Spirituals of the 13th century, the very famous Oraculum angelicum has been attributed to him, used by Arnold of Villanova and by Clareno and which inspired no small part of the action of Cola di Rienzo. According to the legend, while in 1192 C. was celebrating Holy Mass on Carmel, for the feast of St. Hilarion abbot, an angel appeared to him with two silver tablets on which was written a message in Greek, which would have been interpreted for him by the abbot Joachim of Fiore. This circumstance gives grounds for suspecting the milieu in which the revelation was born, impregnated moreover with spiritualistic-Joachimite ideas. In it, furthermore, the struggle between the Angevins and the Aragonese for Naples appears foretold, the punitive judgment is announced, and in it the abandonment of the clergy and the persecution of the Spirituals are lamented. He worked much for the union of the Churches, and the Carmelite Order commemorates his feast on 6 March.
