CHAUDON, LOUIS-MAYEUL. - Benedictine, historian and philosopher, b. at Valensoles (Basses-Alpes) 20 May 1737, d. at Mézin 28 May 1817.
His principal works are: Nouveau dictionnaire historique (4 vols., Avignon 1766; 2nd ed., 30 vols., Paris 1821 ff.); Dictionnaire historique des auteurs ecclésiastiques (4 vols., Lyons 1767); Éléments de l’histoire ecclésiastique (2 vols., Caen 1786). He opposed the Encyclopedists, and especially Voltaire, in the Dictionnaire antiphilosophique (2 vols., Paris 1767–69).
