CHAUDON, LOUIS-MAYEUL

CHAUDON, LOUIS-MAYEUL. – Benedictine, historian and philosopher, born at Valensoles (Basses-Alpes) on 20 May 1737, died at Mézin on 28 May 1817.

His principal works are: Nouveau dictionn. historique (4 vols., Avignon 1766; 3rd ed., 30 vols., Paris 1821 ff.); Dict. hist. des auteurs ecclésiast. (4 vols., Lyon 1767); Éléments de l'hist. ecclés. (2 vols., Caen 1786). He opposed the Encyclopedists, and especially Voltaire in the Dictionn. antiphilosophique (2 vols., Paris 1767–69).
