CHAPEAUVILLE, JEAN. - Belgian theologian and historian, born in Liège on 5 January 1551, died there on 5 May 1617.
After ordination to the priesthood, he first served as a very zealous parish priest in Liège, particularly meritorious during the plague. He later became an inquisitor of the faith (1583) at the behest of Bishop Ernest of Bavaria, his archdeacon and vicar general, and prepositus of the Chapter of St Peter.
He composed treatises on cases reserved to the manner of administering the Sacraments in time of plague and commented on the Catechism of the Council of Trent.
His qualities as a scholar and critic emerged in the *Historia sacra, profana necnon et politica*, a three-volume work (Liège 1612–16) in which he collected ancient chronicles relating in particular to Belgium.
