COBELLUZIO (COBELLUZZI), SCIPIONE. - Cardinal, b. at Viterbo in 1365, d. at Rome on 29 June 1627. After studying at the Nardini College in Rome and obtaining a degree in law, he worked as a legal adviser to Alessandro Gloriero, president of the Annona, and subsequently to Card. Girolamo Bernerio. With the support of Card. Arigoni, who was very influential at that time, he was appointed secretary of Latin letters. On 19 Sept. 1616 he was created cardinal, by Paolo V, with the title of S. Susanna and, in 1619, was appointed librarian of the Vatican Library. A staunch defender of ecclesiastical liberty, he was in large measure the author of the bull issued by Gregorio XV concerning the election of popes. He was a great scholar and patron. He took part in the Conclaves of Gregorio XV and Urbano VIII. He was buried in the church of S. Susanna.
