COBELLUZIO (COBELLUZZI), SCIPIONE. - Cardinal, b. at Viterbo in 1565, d. at Rome on 29 June 1627. After studying at the Nardini College in Rome and obtaining a degree in law, he worked as a legal advisor to Alessandro Gloriero, president of the Annonae, and later to Cardinal Girolamo Bernerio. With the support of Cardinal Arigoni, who was very influential at the time, he was appointed secretary of Latin letters. On 19 September 1616, he was created cardinal by Paul V with the title of S. Susanna, and in 1619 he was named librarian of the Vatican Library. A staunch defender of ecclesiastical liberty, he was largely responsible for the bull issued by Gregory XV concerning papal elections. He was a man of great learning and a patron of the arts. He participated in the conclaves of Gregory XV and Urban VIII. He was buried in the church of S. Susanna.
