COBELLUZIO (COBELLUZZI), SCIPIONE. - Cardinal, born at Viterbo in 1365, died at Rome on 29 June 1627. After studying at the Nardini college in Rome and obtaining a degree in law, he worked as a legal adviser to Alessandro Gloriero, president of the Annona, and then to Cardinal Girolamo Bernerio. With the support of Cardinal Arigoni, who was very influential at that time, he was appointed secretary of Latin letters. On 19 September 1616 he was created a cardinal of the title of St. Susanna by Paul V and, in 1619, he was appointed librarian of the Vatican. A strenuous defender of ecclesiastical liberty, he was largely the author of the bull issued by Gregory XV concerning the election of popes. He was a very learned man and a patron of the arts. He took part in the Conclaves of Gregory XV and of Urban VIII. He was buried in the church of St. Susanna.
