CONONE, VESCOVO DI TARSO

CONON, Bishop of Tarsus. - Heretic of the 6th century. Starting from Monophysitism, he followed the doctrines of John Philoponus of Alexandria, which led to tritheism by admitting in the Most Holy Trinity three Natures as well as three Persons.

C. and Eugenius of Seleucia, defeated in a disputation, refused to anathematize John Philoponus, from whom, however, C. broke away over the question of the resurrection of bodies. The sect founded by C. was called that of the Cononites (Nicephorus Callistus, Hist. eccl., XVIII, 49: PG 147, 428-32).
