CRONACA, Simone del Pollaiolo, called Il. - Architect, b. in Florence in 1457, d. there in 1508. His art belongs to the moment of transition, from the fifteenth-century phase to the sixteenth-century one, of Florentine architecture.

Expressing himself through strongly accented architectural values, but not resolved into values of mass, C. strengthens the Brunelleschian schemes. During his stay (1475-85) in Rome, he studied antiquity; having returned to Florence, he again took an interest in Brunelleschi and in the Florentine architecture of the Romanesque, proto-Renaissance period. This is proved by a group of his drawings recently published. From 1495 he was chief master of the Florentine Duomo; the last notice concerning him is from 1595. His principal works, in Florence, are: the cornice and the courtyard of Palazzo Strozzi (1491); the Sala dei Cinquecento in the Palazzo Vecchio (1495-1497), later transformed by Vasari; the church of S. Salvatore al Monte, simple and grand, called by Michelangelo the bella Villanella; some works are disputed, among them the Palazzo Guadagni.
