D'ANDREA, GIROLAMO. - Cardinal, b. in Naples on 12 April 1812, d. in Rome on 14 May 1868. Having already been, among other things, extraordinary delegate for Umbria (1849), he received the purple from Pius IX on 15 March 1852. Of liberal-leaning sentiments, he opposed, especially after 1860, the Vatican's intransigent policy toward the Kingdom of Italy. For this reason and because of his refusal, as prefect of the Congregation of the Index, to sanction the condemnation of a work by F. Liverani, he suddenly left Rome (1864), taking refuge in Naples. Deprived of his cardinal's stipend, he was also suspended from his episcopal functions (1866). Having returned to Rome (1867), he obtained pardon together with reinstatement in his office and his rights, but he lived his last days amid general distrust.
