DANDINO, GIROLAMO. — Cardinal, born in Cesena around 1509, died in Rome on 4 December 1559; he entered the papal chancery under Paul III, became bishop of Caserta on 14 November 1544, and was transferred to Imola on 17 May 1549. He nevertheless continued to belong to the Curia and was entrusted with diplomatic missions to France in 1541, in May 1543, in 1546–47, and in 1548, and to the emperor in 1545 concerning the opening of the Council. Julius III retained him at the head of the secretariat; in April 1551 he sent him to Charles V regarding the disputes with Ottavio Farnese and the Council; on 20 November 1551 he created him a cardinal and then, with the authority of legate, sent him in April 1553 to Brussels to the imperial court. Under Paul IV, like all Paul III’s diplomats, he was kept on the sidelines.
