Dandino, Girolamo

DANDINO, GIROLAMO. - Cardinal, b. at Cesena around 1509, d. at Rome on 4 Dec. 1559; he entered the papal chancery under Paul III, was bishop of Caserta on 14 Nov. 1544, transferred to Imola on 17 May 1549, did not cease to belong to the Curia and was entrusted with diplomatic missions in France in 1541, in May 1543, in 1546-47, in 1548, and to the emperor in 1545 regarding the opening of the Council. Julius III kept him at the head of the secretariat; he sent him in Apr. 1551 to Charles V concerning the differences with Ottavio Farnese and the Council; on 20 Nov. 1551 he created him cardinal and then, with the authority of legate, in Apr. 1553, sent him to Brussels to the imperial court. Under Paul IV, like all the diplomats of Paul III, he was kept at a distance.
