DE MANDATO, PIO. - Jesuit, b. in Naples on 11 Dec. 1850, d. in Rome on 11 Apr. 1914. He devoted a great part of his activity to the struggle against the Protestants, who, after 1870, were attempting a propaganda campaign in the very center of Catholicism.

He published a manual of philosophy: Institutiones philosophicae (Rome 1894; 4th and 5th eds. [ibid. 1929], edited by C. Boyer); Il Protestantesimo, la sua origine, le sue basi (ibid. 1902); Il cattolico premunito contro gli attacchi dei protestanti (ibid. 1904); Dissertazioni filosofiche (ibid. 1907), etc.
