DE MANDATO, PIO. – Jesuit, born in Naples on 11 December 1850, died in Rome on 11 April 1914. He devoted a large part of his activity to the struggle against the Protestants, who, after 1870, were attempting a campaign of propaganda in the very centre of Catholicism.
He published a manual of philosophy: Institutiones philosophicae (Rome 1894; 4th and 5th eds. [there 1929], edited by C. Boyer); Il Protestantesimo, la sua origine, le sue basi (there 1902); Il cattolico premunito contro gli attacchi dei protestanti (there 1904); Dissertazioni filosofiche (there 1907), etc.
