DOMENICO of SILOS, saint. — Born in Cañas, province of Logroño (Spain), around the year 1000. Having become a Benedictine, he restored the priory of his native town and brought renown to the monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla and San Sebastián de Silos, near Burgos, where he died in 1073. From 1041 until his death, he governed this monastery, making it an important center of religious life.
Among those blessed by the saint was the blessed Aza, future mother of the founder of the Order of Preachers, who later wished her son to bear the saint’s name.
The monastery of San Sebastián and the town that grew up beside it soon took the name of San Domenico di Silos. The translation of his body took place in 1076; his name first appeared in the Roman Martyrology only in 1748.
