DOMENICO of SILOS, saint. – Born at Cañas, province of Logroño (Spain), around 1000. Having become a Benedictine, he restored the priory of his native town, and brought distinction to the monastery of S. Millán della Cuculla (Cogulla) and to that of S. Sebastiano di Silos, near Burgos, where he died in 1073. From 1041 until his death he governed this monastery, making it an important center of religious life.
Among those who benefited from the Saint was b. Aza, future mother of the founder of the Order of Preachers, who later wished her son to bear his name.
The monastery of S. Sebastiano and the town that arose beside it soon took the name of S. Domenico di Silos. The translation of his body took place in 1076; he appeared for the first time in the Martirologio romano only in 1748.
