DONNER, GEORG RAPHAEL. - Austrian sculptor, b. at Esslingen on 24 May 1693, d. at Vienna on 15 Feb. 1741. A pupil from 1706 of Giovanni Giuliani at Heiligenkreuz, in 1715 he was in Vienna, where he returned after having also worked in Salzburg (1725-28) and Pressburg.
In the field of Austrian sculpture, D. is undoubtedly the most significant representative of the anti-baroque, specifically anti-Berninian current, which would contribute in Austria, as in the other regions of Europe, to easing the way for the neoclassical ideals that clearly established themselves later at the end of the 18th century. At times D. casts his images in lead, which allows him to obtain very remarkable effects of softness.
His principal works are, besides the decoration of the staircase of the Mirabell Palace in Salzburg, in Vienna the "Providence" fountain in the Neuer Markt, whose sculptures, like others, such as the Charles V and the Fame, are today preserved in the Barockmuseum. In Pressburg the high altar of the church of St. Martin and in the cathedral of Gurk the Pietà on the altar of the Cross (1741) and the panels of the pulpit.
