ELISABETH OF HUNGARY. – Dominican, daughter of Andrew III, King of Hungary (d. 1301) and his first wife Fennina of Poland (d. 1295), born in Budapest c. 1295, died at Töss near Winterthur (Switzerland) on 6 May 1337. While still a child she was betrothed to Wenceslas, son of the King of Bohemia, who in 1301, barely twelve years old, was proclaimed King of Hungary under the name Ladislaus; in 1305 he renounced that kingdom and his betrothal to E.
She, at the wish of her stepmother Agnes of Austria, was then to have married Henry of Austria (brother of the stepmother), but the pious princess preferred the monastic veil. From 1309 until her death she lived devoutly in the famous Dominican convent of Töss, surrounded by the veneration of her fellow sisters, who admired her great conformity to the will of God and her other outstanding virtues. She was buried in the convent church. Her cult has not yet been approved.
