ERBERMANN, VITUS. - German controversialist, b. of a Lutheran family at Rentweinsdorf (Bavaria) on 25 May 1597, d. at Mainz on 8 Apr. 1675. Having converted, in 1620 he entered the Society of Jesus. For 27 years he was professor of philosophy, dogmatic theology, moral theology, and controversy; then for 7 years he governed the Pontifical Seminary of Fulda. His long experience in teaching, endowing him with broad culture, a stringent logic and a rare clarity of exposition, made him a formidable opponent of the errors of his times. He fought with particular effectiveness syncretism, which aimed at reconciling the novelties of the reformers with the immutable principles of Catholicism. He wrote: Anatomia Calixtina (Mainz 1644); Irenicon catholicum (2 vols., ibid. 1645-46); Interrogationes apologeticus (Würzburg 1651); Examen examinis Couringiani (ibid. 1655); Anti-Musaens, i. e. parallela Ecclesiae verae et falsee (ibid. 1659); Anti-Musaens pars altera, (ibid. 1661); Nervi sine mole (ibid. 1661); In difesa del Bellarmico; Aserta de fide divina (ibid. 1665); Trophæa Romana S. Catholicae Ecclesiae (Mainz 1672).
