ERATH, AUGUSTIN. - Theologian, b. at Buchloe (Swabia) on 28 Feb. 1648, d. at Passau on 5 Sept. 1719. A canon regular of the Order of St. Augustine, he was named apostolic protonotary by the Pope in 1680 and count palatine by the Emperor; then in 1698 he was promoted by the bishop of Passau to abbot of St. Andrew at Wettenhausen.
Besides numerous translations of devotional books, particularly of F. Picinelli and P. Segneri, he occupied himself above all with the history of his Order, whose glorious scholastic tradition he restored to vigor, and with theology, aiming to reconcile the Thomist tendency with the Molinist one in the question of Grace. Of his abundant output only the following are remembered: Philosophia s. Augustini (Dillingen 1678); Unio theologica san conciliatio praedeterminationis physicae... et decreti divini extrinesse efficacis (Augsburg 1689); Commentarius theologico-uridico-historicus in regulam s. Augustini (Vienna 1698). Of the unpublished works the following are remembered: Theologia scholastica; Tractatus singularis ad meutem s. Augustini de Sacramentis; Tractatus de Immaculata Conceptione B. Morine Virginis; Philosophia Evathiana.
