ERATH, AUGUSTIN. - Theologian, b. at Buchloe (Swabia) on 28 Feb. 1648, d. at Passavia on 5 Sept. 1719. A regular canon of the Order of S. Agostino, in 1680 he was appointed apostolic protonotary by the Pope and count palatine by the Emperor; in 1698 he was then promoted by the bishop of Passavia to abbot of S. Andrea at Wettenhausen.
Besides numerous translations of devotional books, especially by F. Picinelli and P. Segneri, he devoted himself chiefly to the history of his Order, whose glorious scholastic tradition he revived, and to theology, seeking to reconcile the Thomist tendency with the Molinist one in the question of Grace. Of his abundant production, only the following are mentioned: Philosophia s. Augustini (Dillingen 1678); Unio theologica san conciliatio praedeterminationis physicae... et decreti divini extrinesse efficacis (Augusta 1689); Commentarius theologico-uridico-historicus in regulam s. Augustini (Vienna 1698). Among his unpublished works are mentioned: Theologia scholastica; Tractatus singularis ad meutem s. Augustini de Sacramentis; Tractatus de Immaculata Conceptione B. Morine Virginis; Philosophia Evathiana.
