ERATH, AUGUSTIN. - Theologian, b. at Buchloe (Sweden) 28 Feb 1648, d. at Passau 5 Sept 1719. A canon regular of the Order of St Augustine, in 1680 he was appointed by the Pope a protonotary apostolic and by the Emperor a count palatine; in 1698 he was then promoted by the Bishop of Passau to be Abbot of St Andrew at Wettstetten.
Besides numerous translations of devotional books, particularly of F. Picinelli and P. Segneri, he devoted himself especially to the history of his Order, reviving its glorious scholastic tradition, and to theology, seeking to reconcile the Thomist tendency with the Molinist in the question of Grace. Of his published works there remain only: *Philosophia Augustini* (Dillingen 1678); *Unio theologica seu conciliatio praedeterminationis physicae et decretorum divinorum eximiae efficacis* (Augsburg 1689); *Commentarius theologico-rudicis-historicus in regnum Augustini* (Vienna 1698). Among his unpublished works are remembered: *Theologia scholastica*, *Tractatus singularis ad mentem Augustini de Sacramentis*, *Tractatus de Immaculata Conceptione B. Mariae Virginis*, *Philosophia Erathiana*.
