ERNOLF of ROCHESTER. - Benedictine bishop and writer, born at Beauvais ca. 1040, died at Rochester on 15 March 1224. A disciple of LANFRANC (q.v.), he followed him to England, where he became prior of the monastery of Canterbury, abbot of Peterborough (1070), and bishop of Rochester (1214).
He wrote: *De rebus ecclesiae Roffensis* (PL 163, 1443-56), important for the history of that diocese; *Tomellus de incerti contigui* (PL 163, 1458-74); *Responsiones ad quæstiones de sacramento Eucharistiae* (in L. d’Achery, *Spicilegium*, II, 2nd ed., Paris 1723, pp. 470-74). The eucharistic questionnaire presented to him by his confrere Lambert provided him with the opportunity to expound, with singular precision, the doctrine of real presence under the individual species.
