ERNOLFO DI ROCHESTER

ERKENWALD OF ROCHESTER. - Benedictine bishop and writer, b. at Beauvais ca. 1040, d. at Rochester on 15 March 1124. A disciple of Lanfranc (v.), he followed him to England, where he became prior of the monastery of Canterbury, abbot of Peterborough (1107), bishop of Rochester (1114).

He wrote: De rebus ecclesiae Roffensis (PL 163, 1443-56), important for the history of that diocese; Tomellus de incertis coniugis (PL 163, 1458-74); Responsiones ad quinque quaestiones de sacramento Eucharistiae (in L. D'Achery,

Spicilegium, II, 2nd ed., Paris 1723, pp. 470-74). The eucharistic questionnaire presented to him by his confrere Lambert offered him the opportunity to set out, with singular precision, the doctrine of the real presence under each of the species.
