GANDOLFO di BOLOGNA. - Theologian and canonist of the 12th century, d. around 1185.

Author of a Gloss on Gratian's Decretum, known until now only through citations, and of a book of sentences (Quatuor libri sententiarum, ed. J. V. Walter, Vienna 1924), composed probably between 1160 and 1170 and often cited by the early Scholastics. This work is later than Peter Lombard's Sentences and undoubtedly depends on them, yet it should not be considered a mere summary of them. G. is regarded as a representative of the so-called Christological nihilism, which was later condemned by Alexander III.

Unfortunately, of G.'s canonical work (Gloss on the Decretum) nothing remains but what the later glossators preserved, and above all the Summa Lepicensis and Uguccione. A part of these glosses has been reproduced in the ordinary gloss of Johannes Teutonicus. But many citations are still unpublished in the manuscripts. What further complicates the assessment of these citations is the confusion still possible between the sigla (with the letter G., Gerard Pucelle, bishop of Coventry, d. in 1184, is also indicated).

G. taught at Bologna, but that he was the teacher of Uguccione, as Schulte would have it, has not been demonstrated so far. It seems that he lived at least until 1185, because in that year he is mentioned among the living by one of Uguccione's continuators, but the date of his death is unknown.
