GIACINTA MARESCOTTI, Saint. - Roman virgin, daughter of Marcantonio Marescotti and Ottavia Orsini, born in Vignanello in 1586. She professed the Third Order of St. Francis in the monastery of St. Bernardino in Viterbo, though in her early years she left much to be desired in terms of fervor and religious regularity.
Having repented, she undertook a life of great austerity and mortification, which led her to a high degree of perfection. She also distinguished herself for her charity, beneficence, and peacemaking actions; she was favored with celestial charisms. She left behind a small autograph diary (Archive of the Holy Twelve Apostles, Rome) containing some brief thoughts that reflect her spirituality, nourished by Eucharistic piety and a burning thirst for mortification. She died in Viterbo on 30 January 1640, at the age of 54, and was canonized by Pius VII in 1807. Her body is venerated in the aforementioned church of St. Bernardino, which was destroyed by aerial bombings. Her feast is celebrated on 30 January.
