GIACOMINO da VERONA. - Franciscan poet of the second half of the 13th century, of whose life no other biographical data are known. His output forms part of the 13th-century didactic-religious literature that flourished in northern Italy, to which he brings a personal descriptive interest and a more free-and-easy moralizing.

In the two short poems De Ierusalem coelesti and De Babylonia civitate infernali he sings, following the Apocalypse, with an ingenuousness and a primitiveness of imagination that is almost barbaric, and which at times darkens into the grotesque, the joys of paradise and the torments of hell: crude material, which in Dante's Commedia would find its definitive voice. Some critics are inclined to attribute to him also certain laude in honor of the Virgin, a Passione, a Resurrezione and other sacred lyrics.
