JOANNA THE MAD, Queen of Castile and Aragon. - B. in 1479 at Toledo, d. 12 April 1555 at Tordesillas. Daughter of Ferdinand II the Catholic, king of Aragon, and of Isabella of Castile, in 1496 she married Philip the Handsome, son of Maximilian I, emperor of Germany, and of Mary of Burgundy.

From this marriage were born in 1500 the future emperor Charles V and in 1503 Ferdinand I of Habsburg. After her mother's death, J. was recognized by the Cortes in 1505 as queen of Castile, but, since she had shown signs of mental infirmity, the regency was entrusted to her father. Three years after the death of her husband, which occurred in 1506, J. withdrew to the castle of Tordesillas, where she remained until her death.
