WILLIAM OF ALNWICK. - English Scholastic, Franciscan, d. 1332. He follows Scotist doctrines, though with a certain independence. He is the author of a Commentary on the Sentences, of Quodlibeta, and of Quaestiones de esse intelligibili.

In the latter G. asks what the reality of the thought object as thought object is. Against Duns Scotus, he concludes that it has no reality, not even a relative one: to the object thought, being thought adds nothing; in the intellect, the being of the object thought is not distinguished from the being of the intellect itself. He agrees with Duns Scotus, however, in denying rigorously demonstrative value to the arguments in favor of the immortality of the soul: this truth is made absolutely certain only by Revelation.
