GUGLIELMO di ALNWICK. - English Franciscan scholastic, d. 1332. He follows Scotist doctrines, though with a certain independence. He is the author of a Commentary on the Sentences, Quodlibeta, and Quaestiones de esse intelligibili.
In the latter, G. asks what reality belongs to the object of thought as thought. Against Duns Scoto, he concludes that it possesses not even a relative reality: being thought adds nothing to the object thought; in the intellect, the being of the object thought is not distinct from the being of the intellect itself. He agrees with Duns Scoto, however, in denying strictly demonstrative value to the arguments in favour of the immortality of the soul: this truth is rendered absolutely certain only by Revelation.
