HOHENEMS, JAKOB HANNIBAL. - Soldier, born 13 May 1530 at Hohenems, died there 26 Dec. 1587. He saw his first action in 1547, when he took part in the war against the League of Schmalkalden.
Later he served in Italy (war against Ottavio Farnese, Duke of Parma and Piacenza, 1551; the war of Duke Cosimo of Tuscany against the Republic of Siena, 1553–55) and in France. In 1565 Pius IV appointed him commander-in-chief of the papal forces and governor of Spoleto and Cerveteri, a post he retained under Pius V. BIBLICA.: G. V.
