HORNIG, KÁROLY DE

HORNIG, Károly de. – Cardinal, born in Budapest on 10 Aug. 1840, died in Veszprém on 11 Feb. 1917. From a noble family, he completed his studies at the Augustinianum in Vienna and was ordained priest in 1862. In 1870 he accompanied Cardinal Simor to Rome for the Vatican Council. He was ordinary professor of theology at the Royal University of Budapest and also directed the journal *Religio*. In 1878 he became canon of Esztergom and was chosen by Cardinal Simor to head the primatial chancery. In 1888 Leo XIII appointed him bishop of Veszprém. In the consistory of 2 Dec. 1912 Pius X created him cardinal with the title of S. Agnese fuori le mura. On 30 Dec. 1916 he crowned the new sovereigns of Hungary, Charles and Zita. His life was entirely devoted to fostering Catholic scientific and charitable institutions in Hungary.
