HORNIG, KÁROLY DE

HORNIG, KÁROLY de. – Cardinal, born in Budapest on 10 August 1840, died in Veszprem on 11 February 1917. Of noble family, after completing his studies at the Augustineum in Vienna, he was ordained a priest in 1862. In 1870 he accompanied Cardinal Simor when the latter went to Rome for the First Vatican Council. Ordinary professor of theology at the Royal University of Budapest, he also directed the journal Religio. Canon of Esztergom in 1878, he was chosen by Cardinal Simor to direct the primatial chancery. In 1888 Leo XIII appointed him bishop of Veszprem. In the Consistory of 2 December 1912, Pius X created him cardinal of the title of S. Agnese fuori le mura. On 30 December 1916 he crowned the new sovereigns of Hungary, Carlo and Zita. His entire life was devoted to promoting Catholic scientific and charitable institutions in Hungary.
