Iwannis, Metropolitan of Dara (Syria)

IWANNIS, metropolitan of DĀRĀ (Syria). — A Monophysite Syriac writer who lived in the 9th century. Most of his works are still unpublished.

Among his dogmatic writings, dealing especially with eschatology, there are 4 books concerning the resurrection of bodies (some chapters are published by H. Gismondi, Linguae Syriacae grammatica, Beirut 1900, pp. 60–66) and the priesthood (fragments published by H. Gismondi, ibid., pp. 66–68; P. Zingerle, Monumenta Syriaca, I, Innsbruck 1869, pp. 105–10; J. Overbeck, S. Ephraemi... opera selecta, Oxford 1865, pp. 409–13).
