LA COMBE, FRANÇOIS. - Barnabite, b. at Thonon (Haute-Savoie) ca. 1640, d. at Vincennes on 29 June 1715. Superior of the College of Thonon (1677), then of the house of Vercelli (1684), he was recalled to the house of Paris in 1689, where the following year he was shut up in the Bastille as a propagator of Quietism. From there he was relegated to the island of Oléron, then to Lourdes, and in 1712 transferred to the hospital of Vincennes, because he was afflicted with furious madness.
His writing: Orationis mentalis analysis (Vercelli 1686), approved at first as a sound work by the Inquisition in Rome, was afterwards vigorously attacked by others and placed on the Index in 1688. According to some, L. initiated Mme Guyon into Quietist mysticism; others, on the other hand, make him a humble disciple of hers. Certainly the two were bound by a strange mystical affection, based on "pure love," which, however, was misinterpreted by the anti-Quietists, resting as it did on L.'s words in a letter to Guyon (7 May 1698) which, even if genuine, can admit of another benign interpretation.
