LAMPE, FRIEDRICH ADOLF. — Protestant Reformed theologian, b. at Detmold (Bremen) on 18 Feb. 1683, d. at Bremen in 1729. His university studies at Franeker led him to a decisive turn in his orientation; thereafter he was pastor in various cities; then professor of theology and church history at the University of Utrecht (1720–27), and finally parish priest of St. Ansgarius and professor at the Academy of Bremen.
Opposed to theoretical disputes, into which most of the apostolate of the various confessions had degenerated, he sought to propagate a theology founded on Holy Scripture that would actively promote practice and improve not only beliefs but above all the actions of life. To this end he wrote: *Dea Geheimnis des Gundebundes* (1712); *Commentarius annus lytico-exegeticus*; *Evangelium secundum Johannem* (3 vols., Amsterdam 1724–1726); he founded and edited from 1718 to 1722 the journal *Bibliotheca Bremensis*. His name, however, still lives in Reformed circles for his catechisms and sacred hymns: *Mein Leben ist ein Pilgrimstand*; *Mein Fels hat überwunden*; *O wer gibt mir Adlerflügel*, and for his devotional booklet on Communion: *Der heilige Brautschmuck der Hochzeit*; *Gäste des Lammes an seiner Bundestafel* (Bremen 1720).
