LOË, PAUL von. — Ludwig at baptism. Dominican historian, born 31 March 1866 at Wissen Castle (Rhineland), died 19 June 1919 at Düsseldorf.
After his secondary studies at Feldkirch and Vechta and his philosophical and theological studies at Eichstätt and Münster, he took the Dominican habit at Venlo on 15 Nov. 1887, continuing his studies at Rijckholt (where he was ordained priest in 1891) and Louvain (where he became lector in 1892). Lector and superior at Venlo and Düsseldorf, where he was regent of the Studium generale (1912–17), he earned particular
distinction through the foundation of the Thomasbibliothek at Düsseldorf (1891, transferred to Walberberg in 1934).
He founded the series Quellen und Forschungen zur Geschichte des Dominikanerordens in Deutschland. Among other works, he wrote: De vita et scriptis Alberti Magni (in Anal. Boll., 19 [1900], pp. 257–84; 20 [1901], pp. 273–316; 21 [1902], pp. 316–317), Statistisches über die Ordensprovinz Teutonia (Quellen u. Forschungen, 1 [Lipsia 1907]), Statistisches über die Ordensprovinz Saxonia (ibid., 4 [ivi 1910]), ed. I. Meyer, Liber de viris illustribus O.P. (ibid., 12 [ivi 1918]).
