LONGHIN, ANDREA GIACINTO. - Bishop, born at Campodarsego on 22 Nov. 1853, died at Treviso on 26 June 1936. Having entered the Capuchins in 1879, he was made provincial minister in 1902. Elected bishop of Treviso (1904), he gave vigorous impetus there to Catholic Action, provided sound guidance to social works, and took particular care, by example and teaching, of the formation of the clergy.
During the German invasion of 1917, which devastated part of the diocese, he gave proof of great courage; after the war he devoted himself zealously to repairing its ruins. In 1923 he was appointed apostolic administrator of Padova and in 1927 of Udine. Of broad juridical and theological culture, he celebrated a diocesan synod in 1911 and, besides various learned pastoral letters and several pamphlets, published: De resurrectione mortuarum (Roma 1904), Il sacerdote alla scuola di Nazareth (Vedelago 1920), I grandi misteri cristiani (Padova 1945, posthumous ed.).
