LOUIS VIII, the Lion, King of France. - Son of Philip Augustus, b. in Paris on 5 Sept. 1187, d. during a journey to Paris, in 1226. He reigned over France for only 40 months (1223-26), but in such a brief period he earned the appellation of "lion": "he was difficult to rouse and difficult to calm." Before reigning he had collaborated in the work of conquest of his father, Philip Augustus; elected king, he continued it.
Little was needed for him to conquer England; only the submission of King John to Pope Innocent III (1213) and the latter's death (1216) saved England from Capetian domination. Having become king, L. continued the reconquest of the English fiefs in France, annexing Poitou with La Rochelle to the crown.
L. VIII represented above all "the secular arm" in the crusade against the Albigensians, after the death of Simon of Montfort. He succeeded in taking Avignon, but died before having brought the conquest of Languedoc to completion. The acquisition of the sénéchaussée of Beaucaire extended the royal domain, for the first time, as far as the Mediterranean.
At this moment the Capetians have ever more extensive southern interests. Dying, L. VIII leaves to his widow, Blanche of Castile, regent of a child of a few months, a more extensive kingdom and a firmer power.
