LUIGINE OF ALBA. - The Sisters of St. Luigi were founded at La Morra, diocese of Alba, in 1815 by Fr. G. B. Rubino, a priest of that place, and canonically erected on 30 July 1819 by Msgr. G. A. Nicola, bishop of Alba, and recognized civilly on 24 Nov. 1826 by King Charles Felix. Around 1870 they split into two independent groups, that of Alba and that of Acqui, which later came together again with the approval of the Sacred Congregation of Religious in 1938. The decree of praise, with the temporary approval of the Constitutions, is dated 29 Apr. 1948.

The Institute's special purpose is the instruction and Christian education of youth in nurseries and elementary schools, and the care of the sick in hospitals and similar institutions. The Sisters devote themselves to Sunday oratories, women's associations, workshops, etc., and to preparation for first Communion.

In 1948 the Sisters, who form a single category with simple vows, numbered 166, and the novices 5. The generalate house is at Alba. The houses, generally established in country localities, numbered 42.
