MAIGNAN, EMMANUEL. - Scientist, philosopher and theologian, b. at Toulouse on 17 July 1601, d. there on 29 Oct. 1676. Having entered the Minims at the age of 18, because of his marked bent for the mathematical sciences he was sent to teach them in Rome. Returning to Toulouse in 1650, he continued teaching, acquiring fame and celebrity through his works on mathematics and physics.
He fought the abstractness of the Aristotelian physicists of his time, and, appealing to experience, attempted the elaboration of an encyclopedic philosophical system with a sensistic-empiricist basis. He extended its reflections to theological and particularly Eucharistic questions, which were very much alive at that time because of the influences of the new Cartesian philosophy, in the attempts to illustrate the mystery of transubstantiation and the nature of the sacramental species. On the latter M. formulated his theory of the «intentional species», which gave rise to lively polemics.
