PALANCO, FRANCISCO. - Theologian of the Order of Minims, b. at Campos Real in 1657, d. at Madrid on 20 Oct. 1720. He was principal lecturer in theology at Salamanca and subsequently prefect of studies. He was twice provincial, vicar general, synodal qualifier, and visitor of all the libraries of Spain. He refused the bishopric of Panama (1714), but Philip V, whose counsellor he was, compelled him to accept that of Jacca (17 Nov. 1717).
He tenaciously defended the doctrine of s. Tommaso, especially concerning the nature of the Eucharistic species, against his confrère p. MAIGNAN, EMMANUEL (v.). Of his works, published in 14 vols., the principal are: Tractatus de Providentia Dei concordata cum humana libertate et sanctitate divina (Salamanca 1692), in which he rejects middle knowledge without embracing the theory of physical predetermination; De conscientia humana in communi et in particulari (ivi 1694), which follows probabiliorism; De fide theologica in 2nd-2nd Sum. Theol. (ivi 1703); Cursus philosophicus iuxta miram Angelici doctrinam (ivi 1703); Dialogus physico-theologicus contra philosophos novatores (ivi 1704); Tractatus de Verbo incarnato, ad mentem V. Thomae (posthumous, ivi 1722).
