MAL'TSEV, ALEKSEJ PETROVIČ. - Russian liturgical theologian, archpriest. B. in 1854, d. in 1915. Master of theology at the Ecclesiastical Academy of St. Petersburg; teacher of pedagogy at the Ecclesiastical Seminary of that city, then provost of the church of the Russian embassy in Berlin.
He published The Foundations of Pedagogy (St. Petersburg 1885, Berlin 1895), The New Testament, translated (1844-1846) by the poet V. A. Zhukovsky from Slavonic into Russian. He wrote in German several apologetic and informative pamphlets on the Russian Church on the occasion of controversies held with Catholic, Protestant or Old Catholic theologians. Above all, however, M. is known as a translator and commentator of the Russian (Slavonic) liturgical books into German, a work carried out in the last decade of the past century and in the first decade of the 1900s.
