MAL'TSEV, ALEKSEJ PETROVIČ. – Russian liturgical theologian and archpriest. Born in 1854, died in 1915. Master of theology of the Ecclesiastical Academy of Petersburg; teacher of pedagogy at the Ecclesiastical Seminary of that city, subsequently provost of the church of the Russian embassy in Berlin.
He published Le fondamenta della pedagogia (Petersburg 1885, Berlin 1895), and Il Nuovo Testamento, translated (1844–1846) from Slavonic into Russian by the poet V. A. Žukovskij. He wrote in German several apologetic and informative pamphlets on the Russian Church on the occasion of controversies conducted with Catholic, Protestant, and Old Catholic theologians. Above all, however, M. is known as the translator and commentator of the Russian (Slavonic) liturgical books into German, a work carried out during the last decade of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth.
