MANETTI, ANTONIO di TUCCIO. - Mathematician, architect, Dante scholar, b. in Firenze on 16 July 1423,

d. there on 24 May 1497. He was a friend of the greatest humanists of his time.

M. Ficino dedicated to him the translation of the De monarchia, G. Benivieni the translation of the Libro della semplicità della vita cristiana by G. Savonarola, while C. Landino wished to disseminate his views on the Commedia. M. also took part in the political life of the Florentine Republic; he was a researcher and annotator of manuscripts, the author of a Vita di Filippo ser Brunellesco, and the witty and refined narrator of the Novella del grasso legnaiuolo. Upon his death, Benivieni reported in a Dialogo, which he imagined to have been drawn from certain manuscript notes by M., his friend’s ideas concerning the location and shape of Dante’s Inferno.
