ANTONIO DI TUCCIO MANETTI. — Mathematician, architect, Dante scholar, born in Florence on 16 July 1423, died there on 24 May 1497. He was a friend of the greatest humanists of his time.
Marsilio Ficino dedicated to him his translation of *De monarchia*; Giovanni Benivieni the translation of *Libro della semplicità della vita cristiana* by Girolamo Savonarola; Cristoforo Landino wished to disseminate his opinions on the *Divine Comedy*. Manetti also took part in the political life of the Florentine Republic, was a researcher and commentator of manuscripts, and wrote a *Life of Filippo Brunelleschi*. He was a witty and refined narrator of the *Novella del grasso legnagiolo*. Benivieni, at his death, recounted in a *Dialogue*—which he imagined drawn from some manuscript notes of Manetti’s—the ideas of his friend regarding the location and configuration of Dante’s Inferno.
