MANUZZI, GIUSEPPE. – Abbot, philologist, born in Cesena on 18 March 1800, died in Florence on 26 September 1876. Friend and disciple of Abbot Cesari, whose life he wrote, he followed his literary direction and philological taste. He was among the best epigraphists of the century.
He published and edited notable texts of the Italian language cited by the Crusca dictionary: *Meditazione sopra l'arbre della Croce* with the addition of the ordinances of the Mass (Milan 1832); *Della miseria umana*, a sermon by St Bernard, vulgarized in the good century of the language (Florence 1832); *Il libro dei dodici articoli della fede e la vita di s. Alessio* (ibid. 1844); *Trattato del ben vivere* (ibid. 1848); *Quattro leggende del b. Jacopo da Varagine* (ibid. 1849); *Trattato della Messa e della maniera di assistervi e del paramento del prete* (Forlì 1850). His major work is the correction and expansion of the *Vocabolario della lingua italiana* of the Accademia della Crusca (Florence 1833–40), which received praise from Gioberti, Leopardi, Giordani, Tommaseo, and Guasti.
