MINZONI, ONOFRIO. - Sacred orator and poet,
b. at Ferrara in 1734, d. there in 1817. He took part
in the polemics against the Jansenists and gave various
Lenten courses and preaching cycles at Venice, Modena,
Padua, Parma, Piacenza, Ravenna, Bologna, Rome.

In 1811 he published at Ferrara two orations and an exordium. Of his sacred discourses there survives the Lenten course of
1780 (Prediche del can. O. M. ferraese, edited by G. M.
Cornoldi, Ferrara 1874), which took place in Rome in the
church of the Gesù and was transcribed and almost stenographed by
the Jesuit Father Cernitoni, who seems to have been able to consul-
t the notes of M. himself. The Lenten course develops the
theme of man, of truth, of the devil, of death
and of the resurrection of Christ, of the last things, of the concord of reason with faith. An identical piety was
revealed by M. in his Poesie (Pisa 1799), of a classicist
taste, rich in images, especially in the lyrics to the
Virgin, in Lode di s. Luigi Gonzaga, in the numerous sacred sonnets and in those Per la morte del padre. M. moreover para-phrased in martellian verses the canticle of Habakkuk.
