MARTIN OF FANO. - Jurist, born in Fano around 1190 to the noble Del Cassero family, also mentioned by Dante (Inf., XXVIII, 77; Purg., V, 73). He studied law at Bologna, where he was a disciple of Azzo and by 1229 was already a professor. He taught at Arezzo, where he was rector of the University, from which he immediately moved as professor to Modena. He also held important offices: he was in fact podestà of a city in Romagna and of Genoa twice (1260 and 1262). Shortly afterward he entered the Order of St. Dominic and died at Fano around 1272. He was buried in the church of St. Dominic.
He was highly esteemed among the Bolognese students of law, and his works are much cited, although they have for the most part been lost. The most important are: De iure emphytentico, a treatise often printed but under the name of Guido da Suzzara; De modo studendi, a brief treatise but full of learning compiled by Alberigo and of which a manuscript survives; De homagiis, which has been almost entirely repeated in Durand's Speculum; a Formularium super contractibus et libellis (ed. Wahrmund 1907); an Ordo iudiciarius (ibid. 1907); De imploratione brachii saecularis, of which a new manuscript has recently been edited (v. bibl.).
