"MIRARI VOS". - Opening phrase of the encyclical of Gregory XVI, dated 15 Aug. 1832, against the errors of Lamennais (v.).

The Pontiff, after an exordium on the present evils, recalls his mission as guardian and interpreter of the Revelation, against whose principles at that moment oppositions were rising from many quarters, for example, on celibacy and on Matrimony; then he sets out and refutes the theory of religious indifferentism and of the consequent liberalism, concretized in the loudly proclaimed freedoms of conscience and of the press and in the juridical system of the separation of Church and State. The document closes with the invitation to loyal submission to the constituted authorities.

Throughout the encyclical there run juridical-dogmatic themes, which were alive and felt throughout the whole century and which returned, clarified and sifted, in the Syllabus (v.) of Pius IX.
