MONALDO DA CAPODISTRIA. - Canonist, who was certainly a member of the Minorite Order, died at Capodistria before 1285.

Scarce information about him remains; indeed he has often been confused with the namesake Monaldo da Ancona or Monaldo Beneventano. Within the Order he held various offices and was provincial of Dalmatia. He is the author, among other things, of several sermons, developed with doctrinal apparatus and similar to brief treatises on each individual subject. His best-known work, printed at Lyon in 1516, is commonly called the Summa Monaldina, written around 1274. It has also been called the Golden Summa (perutilis atque aurea), and in the past it was even confused with a Summa casuum conscientiae, but in general it was called Summa iuris canonici, on account of its continual references to the Decretals and to principles of law. It has not yet been scientifically established that the work is by this author, but this is very probable.
