Morgott, Franz

MORGOTT, FRANZ. - Catholic theologian and philosopher, b. at Mühlheim (Franconia) on 12 June 1829, d. at Eichstätt on 3 Feb. 1900. Professor of philosophy and (from 1869 to 1900) of theology at Eichstätt; from 1896 also dean of that chapter. A distinguished representative of Neo-Scholasticism in Germany, he combined speculative penetration with a vigilant critical sense. He was in contact with the leading Neo-Thomists of Italy (Liberatore), France, Spain and Belgium.

He published: Geist und Natur im Menschen (Eichstätt 1860); Die Theorie der Gefühle im System des hl. Thomas, (ibid. 1864); Die Mariologie des hl. Thomas (ibid. 1878); Der Spender der Sakramente nach der Lehre des hl. Thomas (ibid. 1886) and numerous articles in the Katholik and in Wetze-Welte's Kirchenlexikon.
