MORGOTT, FRANZ. – Catholic theologian and philosopher, born in Mühlheim (Franconia) on 12 June 1829, died in Eichstätt on 3 February 1900. Professor of philosophy and (from 1869 to 1900) of theology in Eichstätt; from 1896 also dean of that chapter. A prominent representative of neo-Scholasticism in Germany, he combined speculative insight with a vigilant critical sense. He was in contact with the principal neo-Thomists of Italy (Liberatore), France, Spain, and Belgium.
He published: Geist und Natur im Menschen (Eichstätt 1860); Die Theorie der Gefühle im System des hl. Thomas (ibid. 1864); Die Mariologie des hl. Thomas (ibid. 1878); Der Spender der Sakramente nach der Lehre des hl. Thomas (ibid. 1886), as well as numerous articles in the Katholik and in Wetze-Welte’s Kirchenlexikon.
