FRANZ MORGOTT. — Catholic theologian and philosopher, born at Mühlheim (Franconia) on 12 June 1829, died at Eichstätt on 3 February 1900. Professor of philosophy and (from 1869 to 1900) of theology at Eichstätt; from 1896 also dean of that chapter. A prominent representative of neo-scholasticism in Germany, he combined speculative penetration with a keen critical sense. He was in contact with the principal neo-Thomists of Italy (Liberatore), France, Spain, and Belgium.
He published: *Geist und Natur im Menschen* (Eichstätt 1860); *Die Theorie der Gefühle im System des hl. Thomas* (ibid. 1864); *Die Mariologie des hl. Thomas* (ibid. 1878); *Der Spender der Sakramente nach der Lehre des hl. Thomas* (ibid. 1886) and numerous articles in *Der Katholik* and in the *Kirchenlexikon* of Wetzler-Welte.
