MUSTIOLA, Saint, Martyr. — She is commemorated in the *Martyrologium Hieronymianum* on November 23, while in the *Roman Martyrology*, in accordance with the *Passio*, on July 3. M. was a noblewoman from Chiusi, probably the founder of the cemetery of the same name located about a mile from the city, which may date back to the 3rd century.
The *Passio* recounts that during the reign of Emperor Aurelian, while the vicar Turcius was persecuting Christians, M. would go by night to the prisons to comfort the confessors of the faith. One day she was accused by a certain Torquatus and brought before Turcius’ tribunal. Having learned that M. was a relative of Emperor Claudius, Turcius tried to persuade her to apostatize, but in vain. To vent his hatred, Turcius then had all the prisoners beheaded, especially venting his fury against the deacon Ireneus. Seeing such cruelty, M., emboldened, reproached Turcius for his brutality, and was therefore condemned to flogging, during which she died. Her body was buried by a certain Marcus outside the city walls in her cemetery.
