«O PRIMA VIRGO PRODITA». – Hymn of the Vespers for the feast of the Assumption, composed by the Jesuit Fr. V. Genovesi for the new office of the Assumption imposed by Pius XII upon the universal Church, following the dogmatic definition, by decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites dated 27 April 1951 (AAS, 48 [1951], p. 399).
It extols the Virgin who, predestined to be Mother of God, crushes the head of the enemy serpent, and receives from the angel the announcement of her divine motherhood. The reward and consequence of this privilege is her Assumption into heaven, body and soul, which human nature rejoices to see exalted in her, and with her destined for eternity. It concludes with a devout supplication to the Virgin, that she may obtain for us, exiles, possession of the blessed homeland.
