«O PRIMA VIRGO PRODITA». — Hymn of Vespers for the feast of the Assumption, composed by the Jesuit Fr. V. Assumption, imposed by Pius XII on the universal Church after the dogmatic definition, by decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites dated 27 April 1951 (AAS, 48 [1951], p. 399).
It celebrates the Virgin who, predestined to be Mother of God, crushes the head of the enemy serpent and receives from the angel the announcement of her divine maternity. The Assumption into heaven, body and soul, is the reward and consequence of this privilege of hers; human nature rejoices in it because it sees itself exalted in her and, with her, destined for eternity. It concludes with a devout supplication to the Virgin, asking that she obtain for us exiles possession of the blessed homeland.
