PFEFFINGER, JOHANN. - Lutheran theologian, b. at Wasserburg am Inn on 27 Dec. 1493, d. at Leipzig on 1 Oct. 1573. A priest in the care of souls in the Salzburg region and at Passau, he went over to Lutheranism in 1523 and took refuge in Wittenberg.
He took part in the introduction of the "reformation" in Leipzig in 1539: here he became "superintendent" in 1540, professor of theology in 1543, spending the rest of his life there as preacher and controversialist. P.'s name is linked to two internal controversies of Lutheran theology: to that of the adiaphora, concerning the Catholic ceremonies and liturgical usages reinstated in Saxony in 1548 by the Elector Maurice, according to the directives of Charles V: P., with Melanchthon, maintained their acceptability, as things "indifferent" to pure doctrine, whereas Flacius Illyricus and Amadori made of them a question of conscience. In the synergistic controversy (v.), that is, concerning the collaboration of the human will in conversion, P. maintained its possibility, again here in contrast with the rigid Lutherans, supporters of "sole grace" and of the "servile will." He set out his ideas in De libertate voluntatis humanae quaestiones (Leipzig 1556). As a synergist he was condemned by the Formula of Concord of 1578.
