POGLIASCA, GIOVANNI FRANCESCO. - Scholar and jurist, born at La Spezia. Died in the year 1561. He was chaplain of CardinalGiuliano della Rovere, then referendary of the two Signatures, master and provost of the hospital of S. Spirito in Rome.
On behalf of the Holy See he carried out diplomatic activity in the peace mediation between Spain and France. Paul II, in recognition of his merits, on 29 Dec. 1537 created him bishop of Luni-Sarzana. Until then the diocese had been governed by Bishop Silvestro Benetti (d. 1537), of whom no historian has handed down a good memory. Moreover, because of the plague that from 1522 had raged in Lunigiana until 1528, very many families died out and the episcopal city itself and numerous villages remained almost deserted of inhabitants. The P., sensitive to so many calamities, strove with love and zeal to make the religious spirit and general well-being flourish again; he was an example of a blameless life and so poor as to give rise to suspicion of avarice. Of his works are known: De duello, published at Rome, and Compendiaria moralis vitae, posthumous, with a dedication to Urban VIII.
