PRUNER, JOHANN EVANGELIST. - Moral theologian, b. in Nuremberg on 25 February 1827, d. in Eichstätt on 11 July 1907. Having completed his theological studies in Rome at the Collegio Germanico and been ordained a priest in 1849, he carried out his teaching activity in Eichstätt at the episcopal Seminary, of which from 1862 he was also rector, exerting a broad influence on the students of theology, who flocked there also from other dioceses. To teaching he joined an intense pastoral activity.

Hence the note of practicality, not unaccompanied by solidity, of his works, of which the principal ones are: Katholische Moraltheologie (Freiburg im Br. 1875-77, in 2 vols., 3rd ed. 1902-1903), in which he develops particularly the doctrine of the virtues, and the Lehrbuch der Pastoraltheologie (Paderborn 1900, in 2 vols., 4th ed. 1923-28 edited by J. Seitz and F. X. Thurnhofer). P. was moreover the author of numerous pious publications.
