PRUNER, JOHANN EVANGELIST. - Moral theologian, born in Nuremberg on 25 February 1827, died in Eichstätt on 11 July 1907. After completing his theological studies in Rome at the German College and being ordained priest in 1849, he carried out his teaching activity at Eichstätt in the diocesan seminary, of which he was also rector from 1862, exerting a wide influence on the theology students who came there even from other dioceses. He combined his teaching with intense pastoral activity.
Hence the note of practicality, not devoid of solidity, in his works, the principal of which are: *Katholische Moraltheologie* (Freiburg im Br. 1875-77, 2 vols., 3rd ed. 1902-1903), in which he particularly develops the doctrine of the virtues, and *Lehrbuch der Pastoraltheologie* (Paderborn 1900, 2 vols., 4th ed. 1923-28 edited by J. Seitz and F. X. Thurnhofer). Fr Pruner was also the author of numerous devotional publications.
