PRUNER, JOHANN EVANGELIST. — Moral theologian, born in Nuremberg on 25 February 1827, died in Eichstätt on 11 July 1907. Having completed his theological studies in Rome at the Collegium Germanicum and been ordained a priest in 1849, he carried out his teaching activity at the Episcopal Seminary in Eichstätt, of which he also became rector in 1862, exerting a broad influence on the students of theology, who came there from other dioceses as well. He combined teaching with intense pastoral activity.
Hence the practical character, not lacking in solidity, of his works, the principal ones of which are: Katholische Moraltheologie (Freiburg im Breisgau 1875–77, in 2 vols., 3rd ed. 1902–1903), in which he develops particularly the doctrine of the virtues, and Lehrbuch der Pastoraltheologie (Paderborn 1900, in 2 vols., 4th ed. 1923–28, edited by J. Seitz and F. X. Thurnhofer). P. was also the author of numerous pious publications.
