QUARTERLY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ANTIQUITIES IN PALESTINE, THE
A collection, now concluded (1949-50), of 14 volumes, which constituted the quarterly bulletin of the Department of Antiquities in Palestine, established by the British Mandatory Government, published in London by the Oxford University Press.
The first volume appeared in 1931-32, succeeding the *Palatino Museum Bulletin*, which had been suspended in 1927.
It served, as a strictly scientific publication tool, to advance those excavations and discoveries that constitute to this day the most fruitful period of archaeological research in Palestine. Its purpose was to publish with technical perfection: a) every discovery made either during excavations conducted by the Department or through other archaeological investigation methods, or that occurred incidentally during its ordinary activities; b) notes on antiquities held in the Department’s Museum or elsewhere in Palestine, though not yet published; c) texts and translations describing monuments or historical sites in Palestine; d) general news on archaeological work in Palestine. Thus, excavations, numismatics, pottery, inscriptions, etc., from this important period are treated masterfully and exhaustively. The collection is even more valuable for its bibliographies on excavations, museum objects, and other Palestinian artifacts, making it indispensable for the study of biblical archaeology.
It has been succeeded, for the Hashemite Kingdom, by the *Annual of the Department of Antiquities in Jordan* (published in Amman by G. Lankester Harding, Director-General); for Israel, among several more accessible options, by the *Israel Exploration Journal* (Jerusalem, 1950-51). Pietro Nober
