SABINO di CANOSA, santo. – He is commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on 9 February.
He was already bishop of Canosa in 528 when he was accused of magic; he was present at the Synod of Rome in 531, and in 537 Pope Agapetus sent him to Constantinople to Justinian to resolve the question of the Monophysites. He took part in the Council of the following year, at which Antinus and Severus were deposed. During his episcopate he worked diligently for the good of the faithful, restoring churches and showing himself to all as a model of virtue. He was a friend of St. Benedict, and St. Gregory the Great extolled his prophetic spirit. He died around 566, after approximately fifty years as bishop. A biography written in the eighth or ninth century does not withstand critical examination.
