ROMANUS, Saint, Martyr. - He is commemorated in the Hieronymian Martyrology on 17 November, as a martyr of Caesarea, and on the following day as a martyr of Antioch.

On this second date the Eastern Martyrologies and the Roman Martyrology commemorate him; the true dies natalis, however, is 17 November, as Eusebius of Caesarea attests. Concerning his martyrdom there exist documents that are almost contemporary and worthy of belief. R., a native of Palestine, was a deacon and exorcist in a small church near Caesarea. During the persecution of Diocletian, finding himself at Antioch and seeing how many were hastening to sacrifice, he began to reproach them. Arrested and condemned by order of the Emperor himself, he had his tongue cut out, was shut up in prison and strangled after horrible torments.
