SABINO di PIACENZA, saint. - Formerly a deacon of the Church of Milan, he took part in the Roman Synod of 368 and was entrusted with carrying the synodal letter to the East.
Around 376 he was made bishop of Piacenza, and in 381 he took part in the Council of Aquileia, at which he put the Arian Palladius to shame. He was again present at the Synod of Milan in 387 and at the Roman Synod of 390, convened by Pope Siricius against Jovinian. St Ambrose held him in high esteem and submitted several of his writings to his judgment; he also wrote him several letters setting forth his views on the earthly paradise, the doctrine of Apollinaris, etc. St Gregory the Great praises his virtues and relates a miracle performed by him to stem the waters of the Po. The date of his death is uncertain (c. 420); in the Roman Martyrology he is commemorated on 11 December. He was buried in the church of the Apostles which he himself had built.
