SAINT-JURE, JEAN-BAPTISTE. - Jesuit, writer on asceticism, b. at Metz on 19 February 1588, d. at Paris on 30 April 1657.
Having entered the Order in 1604, he was for several years a professor of letters and philosophy, then superior of the houses of Amiens, Alençon, Orléans, and Paris. His ascetical works place him among the best spiritual writers of the Society of Jesus, alongside Fr. A. Rodriguez, though he shows himself broader in the matter he embraces, which covers all the fields of asceticism, and more elaborate and polished; and they bear the imprint of the Spiritual Exercises, above all in the impulse toward an intimate, profound love for the person of Jesus Christ. Still read with profit are: De la connaissance et de l'amour du Fils de Dieu, Notre-Seigneur Jésus-Christ (Paris 1634); L'homme spirituel (ibid. 1646); De l'homme religieux (2 vols., ibid. 1657-58); Méditations sur les plus grandes et plus importantes vérités de la foi (ibid. 1637); L'union avec N.-S. Jésus-Christ dans ses principaux mystères (ibid. 1653).
